Space radio chatter

My clients requested one specific sound effect to be used in the animation, this being the use of Russian radio chatter transmitting to the character inside of the space shuttle on instructions when attempting to dock onto the space shuttle. Although there are many great examples of this kind of content online, there is not much info on how people have created this kind of content meaning I will be experimenting in the next few days attempting to make it myself. The clients initially wanted me to just use an online asset in place of this, however I advised them that I could do a much better job at creating my own one and have some Russian friends who could help make it authentic.

I will create a script and send it over to him as soon as I can in order for him to do this, he assured me that he does not have a high quality studio microphone on hand which is understandable but this doesn’t matter as I have confidence in my audio manipulation skills in programs such as Isotope RX to make sure the audio is firstly a good quality before I start editing it to sound like a poor quality vintage Russian space transmission. As previously mentioned there are a number of really great examples of this content online for example this one I found from a quick search on youtube (1).

I also found this more authentic example from the recordings of Russian pilot Yuri Gagarin’s first ever visit to space (2). These both give great starting ideas to how I will attempt to go about this task with the use of heavy static and noise over the voice lines as well as specific eq to replicate the age of the technology being used, of course this will be subjective to what the client wants but mine requested it to be “vintage” specifically.
